Description

  • Heartwood is light to medium brown in color. Sapwood is white with a yellow tint. Straight grained with a coarse texture that is similar to Black Walnut.

How well does it work?

  • Butternut is easy to work with hand and machine tools. Sharp cutters and fine grit sandpaper is recommended to prevent fuzziness when planing due to the lumber being very soft. Butternut nails, screws, , glues, stains, and finishes well.

Seasoning and Durability

  • Butternut is not durable for rot resistance and is susceptible to attack by the common furniture beetle.

Notes on Grade

  • Butternut and Walnut are more lenient in grade than other North American hardwoods, thus there will be a higher waste factor when working with the lumber.

Common Uses

  • Veneer, carving, furniture, boxes, and paneling.
  • * Stock is currently available in limited quanities. This generally means we have less than 500 BF, or the stock is either all narrow or an odd length.
