Description

  • Heartwood begins as a pinkish red color when freshly cut, eventually maturing to a dark brownish red on exposure to light. Sapwood is white colored with a yellowish tint. Straight grained with a smooth texture. Boards can be found with a figuring that is similar to Birch, sometimes called flamed cherry or flamed birch. Occasionally the lumber will have small gum pockets.

How well does it work?

  • Cherry works very well with hand and machine tools. Workability issues may arise when working with the grain of figured boards. Nails, screws, glues, stains, and finishes wells with the exception of occasional blotchiness when staining due to the lumbers closed pores.

Seasoning and Durability

  • Sapwood is susceptible to attack by the common furniture beetle. Heartwood is reasonably durable to decay.

Common Uses

  • Furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments, flooring, plywood, and turning.
  • * Stock is currently available in limited quanities. This generally means we have less than 500 BF, or the stock is either all narrow or an odd length.
