Rift & Quarter Sawn Maple

Janka Hardness

Specific Gravity

  • Northeast United States.

  • Sapwood can range from a very white to an off-white creamy color with hints of red and gold. Heartwood can be dark reddish brown in color. Birdseye maple is the most common figure found, with occasional boards being curly or quilted. Texture is fine and even and is usually straight grained.

How well does it work?

  • Hard Maple works well with and machine tools, but it’s high density will blunt cutting edges. The lumber will also have a tendency to burn when cut with high speed cutters, such as a router. Turns, finishes and glues decently, but blotchiness may occur when staining. Pre-drilling is recommended when nailing and screwing.

Seasoning and Durability

  • Sapwood is liable to attack by the common furniture beetle and not durable for decay resistance. Heartwood is also non-resistant to decay.

Notes on Grade

  • Hard Maple sold by Downes & Reader is sap one face and better and comes in two different color types. Northern Hard Maple is selected for a nice bright white sapwood color. Regular Hard Maple, while cheaper in price, will have a sapwood that is an off-white or creamy white color.

  • Hard Maple may cause skin irritation(dermatitis), runny nose, or have asthma like respiratory effects.

Common Uses

  • Flooring, cabinetry, furniture, panelling, instruments, sporting equipment (baseball bats), turnery, butcher blocks, work benches, and plywood.
  • * Stock is currently available in limited quanities. This generally means we have less than 500 BF, or the stock is either all narrow or an odd length.
